What is Bio-Individuality?
During my coaching studies through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, I was introduced to the theory of Bio-Individuality, a concept promoted by IIN founder Joseph Rosenthal. The program covers all the major dietary theories (vegan, paleo, macrobiotic, raw, etc) due to this theory which states that what works for one person, may not work for another.
I can give testimonial to this theory with my own experience. After about 5 years of eating a mostly plant diet I started to have panic attacks and after blood work I was also diagnosed with anemia. The anemia was “corrected” with an iron shot but the panic attacks continued through my pregnancy and son’s birth until several months later after making changes to my diet which included animal foods. Veganism, does not seem to agree with me, or at least did not for this long term period.
Why is this important?
Finding the best dietary plan for you is not just about health and wellness; it is about self knowledge and trust. Just like in life, just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean you should be too.
So what should you eat?
Many people find when trying a new diet, that they don’t feel right or have peripheral issues. This is a sign that it is not the right plan for them. We all thrive on different combinations of foods and really the only thing that ties all the healthiest ways of eating together is fruits and vegetables. Meat, dairy, grains, beans. Take ’em or leave ’em based on how your body feels best but the bulk of your diet should always be a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Your mission is to find the plan that makes you feel the best and allows you to enjoy your life. If you hate the texture of smoothies, then a raw vegan diet may not be your best option. You may also find that what is working in one season of life, does not continue to work as you move forward. Be open to change, as long as you have your base of fruits and veggies, you’ll figure out the rest as you go.
The Bio-Individuality of life
Take all the concepts above and remove the words about diet and food. Replace them with lifestyle, daily habits or anything else you do in life. This is the theory of Bio-Individuality of Life. One persons lifestyle, habits, likes, dislikes, preferences, etc are not going to be the best way for someone else. In fact for some they may be detrimental!
I’m a big fan of character typing and personality concepts such as DISC, Carol Tuttle’s Energy Types, and Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies. These along with all the other ways we differ from each other (ex: morning person vs night owl) encompass what make us unique.
On top of that the strategies and tools we use will vary. Knowing this information allows each of us to thrive uniquely in our own way.
Bio-Individuality and Health Coaching
When I work with clients I take Bio-Individuality into consideration on a dietary theory level as well the lifestyle, habits and needs of the individual person. Through that lens, I make suggestions and recommendations that I believe will work best for their individual constitution. Together we make changes based upon the client as an individual, not a cookie cutter, one size fits all plan. Ultimately, the client get to create the plan and use the tools and resources that make their life shine the brightest.
